1) 1) How did you happen to do music yourself?

A: An important reason was of course to express and work through own experiences and emotions with the music. Another motivation was the wish to hear a certain kind of song. But as this song didn’t exist in the way you imagined it, you eventually wrote it yourself.

M: As a big music fan it was obvious that I’d like to create music myself some day. In the main my motives are the same as Andi’s.

2) Have you learned to play one or more instruments?

M: As a child I had to learn to play the flute, later accordion (also under duress), at the age of 12 my parents finally gave in and I was allowed to take drum lessons. I’m also getting along with keyboard instruments.

A: I’m a self-taught person regarding keyboard instruments.

3) Did you make music or did you play in a band before Sensory Gate?

A: Yes, I was a member of "Zosma-Project". With this project we did a remix of the song "Heldenplatz" by Kirlian Camera, which was released on the album "Kältecontainer". That was in 2000 / 2001.

M: I had some sort of a „basement band” with friends. We did covers of metal songs and bore the spectacular name "Nervenkitzel" (thrill) – first of all we thrilled the nerves of my parents. ;)

4) According to your myspace side Andi launched Sensory Gate in 2004. What was the reason and the objective for this project?

A: The "Zosma-Project" made solely electronic music, without influences and it was therefore limited. My objective was to create diversified music.

5) Did the objectives change in the course of time?

A: No, the basic idea is still the same.

6) How did the band name arise? Does it have a meaning and if so, which one?

A: Sensory Gate stands for a gate behind which various sensations await, meaning new phonetically perceptions. I liked the idea to have a place I could enter through this gate.

7) How did you happen to get to know each other, how did the cooperation happen?

M: We got to know each other on myspace where we both met a friend musician in the Netherlands. Andi did a remix for his band "Dark Territory" which inspired me and so I got it touch with him. Then one thing led to the other…

8) Andi is living in Italy, Max in Germany. How does the cooperation work with this distance?

A / M: By telephone, internet (skype is a great thing!) and a lot of kilometers driven on asphalt.

9) You have already done several remixes for other bands. Do the other bands get in touch with you or do you contact the bands yourself if you are interested in a song?

A / M: Both. But things often take its course without any effort.

10) Have you already refused to do a remix? If so, what was the reason?

A. / M: No. But we have to say that we wouldn’t do a remix of a song which we don’t like or which doesn’t show at least rudimentary potential to work with it.

11) How do you approach the work on a remix?

A: That’s a secret! *haha*

M: We strip the song to the pants, keep only the bare vocals and maybe some few elements – and then we dress it in new clothes.

12) You have already written two songs for or with other bands (klangstabil/Spektra Paris). What is the interesting thing in such a cooperation, what do you enjoy the most?

A: We enjoy the exchange of ideas with bands which make other kinds of music (e.g. klangstabil belongs to a completely different genre), it broadens the (musical) horizon. And if the result can convince and suits the objective of the cooperation is achieved.

M: The special thing of such a cooperation is the shared creation of music with friends and the friendships which are formed and cemented in this way. The cooperation with musicians whose work you admire is also a huge honor of course!

13) You are actually working on your first album. What is the current status?

A: Finished! *haha*

M: Completely finished...
Seriously: The songs are completely mixed and will be put to the acid test during the next 1-2 weeks before they are going to be mastered.

14) Do you already have a planned release date?

A: No, there’s no definite date yet.

M: We hope that the album will be released in autumn or at the end of this year at the latest.

15) How did the collaboration with the Dante Project happen?

A: My cousin (Prof. Marino Balducci) actually transcribes the „Divine Comedy” by Dante to prose. He had the vision to show the comedy chant by chant in recitative, musical, acting and dancing form. As he knew that I’m making music it was clear to him to ask me if I’d be up to create the music for the project.

16) According to the information on your myspace side you’d like to give concerts in the future. Do you have a time frame?

A / M: We will go about this after the release of the album.

17) How do you imagine your gigs? As a support act? At festivals?

M: Actually I don’t care. The main thing is that we are able to go on stage and play!

18) Are you planning to have live musicians on stage?

A: Yes, if we can arrange it.

M: There are already musicians who assured their support if the date fits with their schedule. We will whether be twosome or with guest musicians on stage. See what happens! ;)

19) How do you imagine the future of the band? Where will you be in 2-3 years?

A: I don’t know…

M: Let’s see where the streets will have led us in 2-3 years

After the interview Sensory Gate was welcomed to the Mhz - Records – family which will also take care of the booking for the upcoming live performances.
And while the last activities are done on the debut album the first ideas already arise for a follow-up.
